Hallo Handball is a project offering a taste of the popular German sport of Handball to young students in Samoa!
Our vision is to visit Upolo in July 2023 to give students (aged 9-12 years old) from up to 10 primary schools the opportunity to experience a new sport and a new language. Handball is a popular Olympic sport in Germany and promotes fair play, fun and physical literacy. We also give the students the chance to learn some German!
Handball is a game that everyone can play and enjoy. All you need is a ball, and a set of goals, and place to play it. This can be indoors or out. Check out this video:
Our plan would be to visit each school 3 times over 3 weeks and to organise an inter-school tournament at the end. We would work with 16-30 students from each school. This could be a whole class or a selected group of students, keen to broaden their horizons. We would work with each group for about an hour each week. We run fun and engaging Handball training sessions, each one building on the previous one. We also find that students easily learn a new language in an active, physical context.
We passionately believe in a healthy mind in a healthy body. "Mens sana in corpore sano". A new sport challenges the body. A new language challenges the mind. Check out what this principal has to say:
Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) is an approach for learning content through an additional language (foreign or second), thus teaching both the subject and the language. It can be very successful in enhancing the learning of languages and other subjects, and helping children develop a positive attitude towards themselves as language learners. We apply elements of the CLIL methodology in our programme by teaching the children about Handball.
We are keen to bring this content based language learning idea to Samoa using Handball, a relatively new sport in this part of the world.

She has worked with Frank before and loves the idea of combining language learning with physical activities and fun.
